Getting To Know... xskarma

After cementing himself with a wealth of rich and dynamic efforts these last few years, Bristol-based artist and producer xskarma has now returned for 2023 to deliver his dreamy new single 'Hello'.

Teaming up with vocalist glasscat for the release, 'Hello' makes for a wonderfully warm and inviting listen. Capturing more of that fresh and alluring trip-hop aesthetic he is known for, he is returning for the new year with one of his most impactful offerings to date here.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The Drums.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I listened to a lot of Jazz fusion, Soul and Blues.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Dark Side of the Moon.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I tend to be inspired by rhythms, so I usually start with a rhythm which I play live on drums.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Propaganda, Elsiane, Silk Sonic, Submotion Orchestra, Snarky Puppy, SYML.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Tame Impala

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Finding the spark of a new melodic idea or a new groove.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not having enough time to make music every day.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Don’t care too much about what others might think and follow your gut instinct.
