The Go! Team - 'Semi Circle'

6/10

After the release of their last full-length 'The Scene Between' saw founding member Ian Parton take most of the reins on the direction and sound, The Go! Team are now fully charged and back together for their fifth full-length effort 'Semi Circle'. And it is clear from the start that the group are looking to rekindle the same magic they brought to their sensational debut album 'Thunder, Lightning, Strike'.

While the band have always looked to diversify and evolve themselves with each passing record, 'Semi Circle' seems very much like a callback to their initial direction. The explosive brass elements and DIY-production leads us to remind ourselves of their formative years, although this new LP doesn't quite have the same punch to it. While there are plenty of moments to enjoy here, it does sometimes struggle with pacing, and leaves us feeling underwhelmed from time to time.

It may not be the anthemic return most of their fans would have wanted, but still makes for an enjoyable listen. The opening single 'Mayday' really brings out the best in their unique sound, and even the part-title track 'Semicircle Song' makes for an interesting and exciting slice of fun.
