Gustaf - 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs'

7/10

Over the last few decades, New York has always looked to fixate itself on a bold and driven direction that many outfits look to emulate. From its post-punk roots, to the early noughties that saw LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture bringing guitar music to the nightclubs, the scene has always looked forward to what can come next. And as Parquet Courts and Bodega currently sit as the pride of the city, emerging newcomers Gustaf are now looking to stand on their shoulders and continue this progressive ideal with their debut album 'Audio Drag For Ego Slots', a record that brims with energy and confidence.

On first listen, it is clear to hear that this lot are very much apart of the vein within their contemporaries. With its sparse instrumentation and jangled approach, 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs' flips between bold and pulsing indie-rock grooves and a more humbled intention that almost sees them walking in the same shoes as Sonic Youth. With vocalist Lydia Gamill almost conceiving the band's entire identity with her distinctive vocal performance, much of this new release is looking to take cues from others on the scene, while always looking for a unique angle that they can call their own.

While the album isn't solid gold from start to finish, 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs' still makes for a wonderfully rich and captivating listen. With the odd quick fire cut scattered throughout keeps the momentum moving forward, it shows them as a strong and focused name emerging right now, something we can definitely see them continuing for years to come.
