Hannah Diamond - 'Reflections'

7/10

Since its earliest incarnations, the PC Music label has done its upmost to twist and deform the world of pop music as we see it. With a string of notable artists such as Danny L Harle, Charli XCX, SOPHIE, and founder A.G. Cook all emerging from its roster to turn the state of commercial appeal on its head, the imprint has also been the home to Hannah Diamond these last few years as she regularly collaborated with many of the acts in the scene but never really looked like she was breaking out on her own anytime soon. But after a flurry of single releases, she now unveils her long-awaited debut album 'Reflections', a solid and concise collection that reflects all that it great about PC Music.

Much like what Charli XCX produced on her latest full-length 'Charli', 'Reflections' is aimed to be a genre-bending and eccentric attempt to make pop music more fascinating and unusual in its sonic delivery. Filled with all the usual auto-tuned vocals and sickeningly glossy production, this new record isn't so much pushing the boundaries of what we have heard before, but instead reinstate the style as a progressive and evolved aesthetic. Rather than trying to penetrate the musically zeitgeist of today, she doubles down on her abstract sound and delivers a bold and vibrant new collection that knows exactly how it should feel.

But while many of her contemporaries have managed to find a niche within the PC Music mission statement, Hannah Diamond is still very much playing it as it always intended to sound. Never looking to falter in any way, 'Reflections' will be seen as a marmite release, with fans of the label loving every minute, while the more fair-weather appreciators looking for a more eclectic and diverse edge to it.
