Hilgrove Kenrick & Nick Norton-Smith - 'Sylph'

7/10

Some collaborations announce themselves with fireworks; others whisper their way into your consciousness. 'Sylph', the joint work from Hilgrove Kenrick and Nick Norton-Smith, belongs to the latter. Rather than flaunting virtuosity, it lingers in the margins, an exploration of sound as atmosphere, memory, and slow revelation.

The piece unfurls as a dialogue between Norton-Smith’s soprano saxophone and Kenrick’s carefully woven orchestral textures, gradually dissolving into electronic haze. Sax lines arc upward, while orchestral figures fold into synth washes that ebb and return with tidal patience. The result is a soundscape that earns your full attention, rewarding close listening with layers that seem to change shape as you lean in.

What sets 'Sylph' apart is its balance of restraint and intention. It never tips into sentimentality, nor does it settle for decorative ambience. Every pause and held note feels considered, inviting us to inhabit the silence as much as the sound. There’s a narrative sensibility at play here, unsurprising given the duo’s backgrounds in film scoring, but it avoids the obviousness of soundtrack writing. Instead of telling you how to feel, it leaves space for your own associations to surface.

For those drawn to the contemplative sound worlds of Nils Petter Molvær or Jan Garbarek, 'Sylph' offers a parallel sense of stillness and drift. But it’s no mere echo as it carries the fingerprints of two musicians attuned to drama, pacing, and the quiet intensity of restraint.

Ultimately, 'Sylph' is music for the thresholds: not quite classical, not quite electronic, not quite jazz. It’s a meditation on the porous edges between genres. In choosing not to chase spectacle, Kenrick and Norton-Smith have crafted a piece that endures by refusing to hurry.
