Hudson Mohawke - 'Lantern'

8/10

While it has been six years since Hudson Mohawke last released an album, that is not to say the last half a dozen years have been squandered. Having cemented himself as one of the biggest hip-hop producers of the last decade, thanks to multiple collaborations with Kanye West, Hud Mo also helped galvanise the trap movement of 2012 as one half of production duo TNGHT. So in all respects, solo material from this man is a rare thing but that's not to say he isn't prolific.

But while his debut album 'Butter' was a mix of unconventional experimentation and mind-blowing beats, 'Lantern' sees the producer looking to fill in more of his minimal trademark sound. Each track seems to appear worlds apart from the one that preceded it, and shows that Mohawke's new sound is more about variety than a specific direction. With a versatile list of collaborators, that includes Antony Hegarty and Miguel, this new release seems to be an expression of the producer's own creativity as he tries not to pigeonhole himself and deliver a record that aims to surprise as well as impress.

It is certainly a brilliantly produced album, with all the familiar hallmarks and eccentricities that have made Hudson Mohawke such a household names in the last few years, and it wouldn't be a surprise to find out young aspiring producers will turn to this for inspiration.
