Jungle- 'For Ever'

7/10

In the years since they released their highly-praised self-titled debut album back in 2014, Jungle have become one of those bands you just seem to keep hearing. Whether it's on TV adverts, film soundtracks or general day-to-day living, the band's biggest hits have had this almost omnipotent presence in our lives ever since. So after milking that release for all it was worth, the band look to continue their soul-inspired psych-pop with a far more polished second studio album 'For Ever', a record that looks to emulate its predecessor in almost every way.

When you first switch onto 'For Ever', your first thoughts are that this is definitely Jungle. The lo-fi beats blended with an Avalanches-esque style production sees the group follow on almost exactly where their last record left off. The differences between them this time remain very subtle, with more emphasis on their lyrics and overall sonic style. Rather than opt for a more general appeal in their songwriting, the band have admitted that this is a more personal collection, recounting more identifiable circumstances in their lyrics, which looks to make this a far less vague release than their debut.

But while it still has its charms, it just doesn't have any of the standout power of its previous release. 'For Ever' seems to be the brushing off of a number of ideas that would have worked just fine on their debut release, meaning that we aren't getting anything new from the group. A solid release but lacking that special Jungle magic.
