The Kentucky Trust Fund - 'Last Flight'

7/10

There’s a rare kind of band that understands how to build a song like a slow sunrise; beginning in shadow, rising steadily, and eventually flooding the room with light. Sacramento’s The Kentucky Trust Fund have mastered that arc, and on their latest full-length 'Last Flight', they lean fully into the emotional lift that has become their calling card.

Spanning just under an hour, the record unfolds with patience and purpose. From the first moments of 'I'm Coming Back', it’s clear that voices are the engine here. Layered vocals stack and swell, wrapping around the instrumentation in a way that feels both intricate and instinctive.

Instrumentally, the band are equally expansive. Acoustic textures intertwine with shimmering strings, and the mandolin steps forward at just the right moments; sometimes slicing through with fiery urgency, other times gliding in with aching tenderness. The dynamic range is impressive as verses feel both intimate and grounded, only to burst into cathartic refrains that demand to be sung back.

Lyrically, 'Last Flight' balances sincerity with bite. There’s devotion here, certainly, but also flashes of wit that keep things from drifting into sentimentality. It’s music that acknowledges the chaos of the world while still choosing to search for something brighter within it.

What makes this album particularly compelling is its sense of movement. Even in its quieter passages, there’s a feeling that each track is carrying you somewhere new. It’s easy to imagine these songs stretching out on stage, amplified by the band’s immersive live energy, where harmonies ring louder and crescendos hit harder.

In all, The Kentucky Trust Fund are constructing emotional landscapes here, and 'Last Flight' feels like an invitation to feel more deeply, to sing more loudly, and to leave a little lighter than you arrived.
