There’s a certain magic to releases that feel like moments where confusion, growth, and self-reflection collide in a burst of sound. And with 'Entrance', Lateral deliver exactly that kind of experience. The project channels the restless spirit of classic Midwest emo while injecting it with a vibrant, modern urgency, resulting in a release that feels both nostalgic and strikingly current.

At its heart, 'Entrance' is a deeply personal collection of songs that wrestle with self-awareness and the uncomfortable process of confronting your own shortcomings. Rather than offering tidy resolutions, Lateral lean into the messiness of introspection as the music captures the sensation of realising something about yourself a little too late.

One of the standout moments comes through the track 'Fruit Bearing Yields', which begins with what appears to be a lighthearted premise: the awkward guilt of receiving a present you don’t particularly love. Yet beneath that surface-level idea lies something far more revealing. As the song unfolds, the narrative shifts inward, becoming a meditation on personal growth, accountability, and the uncomfortable act of recognising one’s own limitations.

Musically, Lateral tap into the emotional charge that defined the emo movement of the late 90s and early 2000s. Angular guitars surge forward with restless energy while the rhythm section provides a driving backbone that keeps the momentum alive. Yet there’s an unmistakable freshness in the way the band approach the sound. Instead of simply recreating the past, they build on it by weaving melodic hooks and dynamic shifts into the arrangements that keep the songs engaging and unpredictable.

What makes 'Entrance' particularly compelling is its balance between vulnerability and energy. Lateral aren’t afraid to expose their doubts or admit mistakes, but they deliver those confessions through music that feels alive and cathartic.

With this debut collection, Lateral prove that introspection sometimes arrives through ringing guitars, urgent rhythms, and lyrics that confront uncomfortable truths head-on. It’s a reminder that growth often begins with recognising the overflow, and having the courage to finally turn the burner down.
