The New York singer-songwriter’s latest single operates through images that feel almost mythic, allowing ordinary romantic uncertainty to take on a much wider emotional dimension. It's the kind of writing that treats love as a force capable of changing how the world itself appears.
He has always been particularly effective when writing from places of emotional ambiguity. Previous releases have examined shifting identity, separation and self-recognition, but 'Burning Love' feels more open-ended. There's no simple heartbreak here and no uncomplicated declaration either. The narrator appears caught between wonder and apprehension, overwhelmed by the scale of what he feels and unsure whether that intensity can be shared.
The song also arrives at an interesting point in his career. 'Till You’re Somebody Else' brought him meaningful chart success, while touring with Jon McLaughlin helped introduce his songwriting to audiences far beyond New York’s smaller venues. But rather than responding by chasing something broader or more commercial, 'Burning Love' feels like a deepening of the qualities that got him there.
His collaboration with producer Phil Ek has also become increasingly important. Ek’s history with artists such as Fleet Foxes and The Shins makes him an obvious partner for a songwriter who values atmosphere without wanting to lose melodic clarity. Leo Sawikin’s music tends to work best when there is room around the voice, and the forthcoming self-titled album already feels well positioned to continue that evolution.
Rather than reducing love to something easily explained, Leo Sawikin lets it remain mysterious, frightening and luminous all at once. And in doing so, he produces one of those rare songs that feels both highly personal and strangely limitless.
