Oxnard’s own Los Xiqueños make an immediate impression with 'El Tequiloco', a debut EP that fuses cumbia, soul, and rock into a sound that feels both rooted and refreshingly original. Across three tracks, the band demonstrates a polished confidence, proving that brevity doesn’t diminish impact as every note, rhythm, and melodic turn feels deliberate and fully realised.
The opening track 'I Played The Fool' sets the tone with snappy hooks and deft interplay between percussion, guitar, and bass. The arrangement never feels cluttered; instead, the instruments converse naturally, giving the track a lively, organic momentum. Vocals glide between tenderness and intensity, making each lyric land with clarity and emotional resonance. 'Lucy' emerges as the EP’s standout, wrapping intimate reflections in a hauntingly melancholic atmosphere, with a refrain that grows subtly, refusing to be overplayed yet sticking in the mind long after it ends.
The closing title-track pushes their palette even further, weaving Mexican and South American influences into the mix. There are nods to iconic acts like Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, but Los Xiqueños assert their own identity, blending regional rhythms with rock sensibilities in a way that feels both playful and sophisticated. Production by José Cano highlights the nuances, leaving space for the arrangements to breathe and ensuring each element is crisply articulated.
'El Tequiloco' is a striking introduction to a band that balances cultural heritage with modern creativity. It’s a confident, well-crafted statement that transcends local boundaries, hinting at international potential without ever feeling forced. In just three tracks, Los Xiqueños prove that their brand of Cumbia Soul Rock has both heart and breadth, marking them as a group to watch in the coming years.
