Mogwai have recruited Iggy Pop for the colossal new single ‘Underground’, arriving alongside news of the Scottish band's 30-year career-spanning collection 'Happy Tears'.
The collaboration carries particular significance for Mogwai's Stuart Braithwaite, who has previously described discovering The Stooges as a life-changing experience. Decades later, that influence comes full circle as Iggy brings his unmistakable presence to a track loaded with crushing weight and simmering frustration.
Iggy describes the song's opening as evoking “crushing modern loneliness”, with his vocal contribution arranged by Matt Sweeney.
Released 8th January through Mogwai's own Rock Action Records, which is itself celebrating 30 years, 'Happy Tears' brings together highlights and rarities from across the band's career. It also includes ‘Brand New Paths to Helicon 1’, a new orchestral reworking featuring the Budapest Art Orchestra.
