Ned Farr & The Good Red Road - 'Ruminations'

7/10

There's something immediately compelling about 'Ruminations' being built from a single relationship and then pulled apart eight different ways. And on their fifth album, Ned Farr & The Good Red Road take love, regret, insomnia, politics, memory and unrealised futures and treat each as a separate doorway into the same emotional story. The result is a concept record that feels expansive without losing its human centre.

'Love’ begins from the anxiety of simply answering the door, while ‘Quantum’ pushes the breakup into far stranger territory, using the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics as a way of imagining the lives that might have unfolded differently. While the title-track tightens the focus again, capturing the circular logic of a sleepless mind that refuses to let anything rest.

Elsewhere, ‘Dog’ turns toward narrative songwriting, framing its warning through an old-man/young-man story, while ‘Pendulum’ deliberately breaks from the relationship arc to bring a more political edge into the record. ‘Education’ then returns to intimacy from another angle, looking at love as something learned slowly rather than simply felt.

‘Nest’ then carries the ache of accepting a future that never arrived, before the eleven-minute, nine-part ‘Pirouette’ closes the album on its most ambitious note.

After more than three decades of playing together, the band began with a full-room improvisation session in August 2025, then spent the following nine months shaping that raw material into finished songs. You can feel that balance between spontaneity and construction throughout 'Ruminations'. The music has the freedom of musicians reacting instinctively to one another, but the final record is anything but careless.

Thoughtful, adventurous and emotionally layered, it's a record that understands a relationship is never just one story. Sometimes it is eight stories, all true at once.
