With their eagerly-awaited new EP 'El Camino', The Nghiems offer up a soundtrack made for golden hours and open roads. Rooted in the warm, unhurried charm that’s long defined their sound, this new EP finds the Oklahoma City outfit leaning into atmosphere over urgency, inviting us to roll the windows down, breathe a little deeper, and just coast.
Recorded in their home studio, 'El Camino' wins you over with its subtle textures, tasteful restraint, and that unmistakable sense of comfort the band has always excelled at. If previously shared tracks like 'Nobody Move' hinted at their ability to create space within a song, this EP expands that idea into something fuller, yet still wonderfully uncluttered.
There’s a lot to love in how The Nghiems approach production here. The guitars are clean but not clinical, the percussion gentle but persistent, and the vocals float just enough above the mix to draw you in without breaking the spell. Where their earlier record 'Soulmatic' explored more upbeat and indie-pop sensibilities, 'El Camino' settles into a more reflective groove. Think of it as the musical equivalent of flipping through old Polaroids while the sky turns orange. There’s a wistfulness baked in, but the mood never sinks into melancholy.
What makes this release especially endearing is its self-assured simplicity. There’s confidence in how these songs take their time, letting melodies unfurl slowly, allowing each note to land where it wants. The band’s chemistry feels stronger than ever. You can hear it in every chord change and layered harmony.
'El Camino' doesn’t reinvent The Nghiems, nor does it need to. It reaffirms what makes them special: the ability to turn understated songwriting into something quietly transcendent. And with a full album on the horizon, this release is just the first stretch of what promises to be a winding, scenic route.
