There has always been something quietly radical about not chasing the new, and on his latest work 'Stream of Consciousness, Vol. 2', Olav Larsen does exactly that. A long a respected figure in Norway’s Americana circles, returns with a vibrant new outing that staggers, smiles through the pain, and carries the scars of long nights and longer questions.
Supported by his regular backing band, The Alabama Rodeo Stars, they too bring just as much innovation and spirit as the artist at the helm. The brushwork of the drums, the sweet ache of pedal steel, and the delicate balance in the vocals all work together in magnificent unity.
Lyrically, the songs avoid grandiosity in favour of small truths. There’s an undercurrent of spiritual searching here, but never comes across as preachy or morose. But what makes this release land so deeply is its humility. From the understated arrangements to the lyrical turns that hit with gusto, this new collection is a slow burn that stays with you right to the end.
In a genre that can often feel either overly polished or performatively rustic, Olav Larsen offers sincerity without spectacle. 'Stream of Consciousness, Vol. 2' is a cracked and quiet beauty that always manages to deliver something new and interesting to keep you hooked right from the off.
