The Proper Ornaments - 'Foxhole'

7/10

Formed by former Veronica Falls member James Hoare, The Proper Ornaments have found themselves with a strong following since their debut release 'Wooden Head' back in 2014. Their nostalgic, psych-sound seems to have struck a chord a populace looking for more of that laid-back, Velvet Underground vibe in today's music. Now armed with a stack of new material, the band return to deliver their highly competent sophomore full-length 'Foxhole'.

While their debut certainly drew comparisons to the 1960s atmosphere, this new album seems to have continued that influence with a more adventurous edge. 'Foxhole' not only plays like classic concept release, it pays homage to an era of simple beauty within music and manages to do so with a gentle ease. They have taken their formative sound, evolved from it and returned with a fantastic collections of singles, both cohesive and engaging.

To say that The Proper Ornaments have found their sound would be an understatement, as this record shows them to have grown into a group that knows exactly what they want to create and how they want to do it. Smooth and elegant throughout, it is certainly a breath of fresh air.
