Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound'

7/10

While their first two albums 'High Visceral (Part One)' and '(Part Two)' established them as a bright and exciting name emerging on the Australian psych-rock scene five years ago, it was their third effort 'And Now For The Whatchamacallit' in 2019 that saw them break out of their homeland and begin their cult dominance on the world stage. Since then the band have been hard at work delivering a flurry of fresh and exciting singles, all leading up to this, their fourth full-length 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mount', the most highly-anticipated offering of their career so far.

While Australia has had its fair share of psych-rock exports, with Tame Impala and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard breaking through in the last decade, the sound of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets feels like a far different beast from the very start. While their counterparts still look for influence within the origins of the sound, these guys are more interested with blending psychedelic tendencies with a punk aesthetic, giving them a rawer and more raucous agenda throughout. So much like their previous collection, 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mount' relies heavily on big riffs and cacophonous production to get through to its listeners.

And although it has plenty of fun and enjoyable moments, it still has this infancy to it where it feels like they are still working out the cohesive direction they want to take their sound. 'SHYGA! The Sunlight Mount' is a bold and ferocious adventure that surprises at many turns, but is still looking for that breakthrough moment that'll see them join their contemporaries in the big leagues.
