Country music has spent decades building its mythology around heat: sun-baked roads, dusty fields, wide southern skies and towns where summer seems to stretch forever. But on 'Northern State of Mind', Rob Bellamy & The Rebel Hearts shift the compass. Their America is defined by frozen lakes, dark winter mornings, close-knit communities and the determination required to keep moving when the landscape itself appears determined to slow everything down.

It's a simple change in scenery, but one with significant consequences. The album doesn't merely place familiar country themes inside colder weather. It argues that geography shapes character, language and memory, giving New England its own legitimate place within the genre’s storytelling tradition.

That position is established firmly by opening single ‘Cold Country’. Written during a severe New England winter after a conversation about the apparent contradiction of creating country music so far from its conventional southern centre, the song turns that perceived disadvantage into a declaration of identity.

And that argument runs through 'Northern State of Mind'. Rob Bellamy and his band aren't attempting to impersonate a region they don't belong to, nor are they rejecting the wider traditions of Americana and country rock. Instead, they are expanding the landscape those traditions can contain.

Here, Rob Bellamy & The Rebel Hearts have created a country record that understands tradition as something capable of travelling. It carries the genre’s familiar concerns into a landscape where the lakes freeze over and determination is measured in winters survived.
