Salt Tree - 'Adrift'

8/10

Salt Tree’s latest EP 'Adrift' cements the Australian indie-folk duo as masters of introspective, heart-soaked storytelling. Across six meticulously crafted tracks, Tom Boerema and Nathan Parsons translate the turbulence of uncertainty into a journey that balances melancholy with luminous hope, creating a collection that feels both personal and universal.

From the outset, the EP sets a contemplative tone with 'Cold Hard Ground', a track that marries gentle acoustic strumming with subtle percussive textures, inviting us into moments of vulnerability and reflection. Boerema’s warm vocals intertwine with Parsons’ harmonies, producing a resonant intimacy that bounces with life. The duo navigate the emotional spectrum with fluidity, as 'Answers' dives into introspection with delicate restraint, while 'Sugar' bursts with the giddy optimism of newfound connection, proving their ability to balance introspective weight with uplifting levity.

'Paradise', co-written with Swedish producer Gustav Nyström in Stockholm, channels the thrill of starting anew, blending airy acoustic lines with evocative melodic flourishes that hint at the excitement of uprooting life for a fresh perspective. Meanwhile, 'Wherever You May Go', co-penned with fellow West Australian Matt Gresham, carries a subtle ache in its lyrics and arrangement, reflecting the bittersweet pull of distance and longing. The EP closes with 'Better Man', a triumphant anthem of self-reflection, framed by their signature acoustic warmth and immaculate harmonies.

Recorded entirely in their Margaret River home studio, 'Adrift' exemplifies the duo’s mastery of self-production, crafting a sound that feels both expansive and intimately grounded. Across the EP, Salt Tree’s ability to blend folk sensibilities with cinematic textures reveals a band that have matured through touring sold-out European stages, festival highlights, and the quietude of remote creative spaces.

'Adrift' is a meditation on being unmoored and finding meaning within the drift. Salt Tree prove that even when life pulls you in different directions, there is beauty, reflection, and hope in the journey. This EP is a radiant testament to connection, resilience, and the understated power of indie-folk storytelling.
