Austin psych-goth trio The Schisms burst into a brighter new chapter with ‘I Learn To Love’, the first taste of forthcoming EP 'Tejas'.
Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Stuart Sikes, whose credits include The White Stripes, Cat Power and Loretta Lynn, the single began as little more than a mantra before taking shape spontaneously in the studio. What emerged is a thrilling collision of punk, psychedelia and unruly rhythms that frontman Carson Barker describes as resembling “a chaotic Bo Diddley song”.
Its accompanying video, created with Three-Eyed Cat Collective, dives into the stranger side of the band's Austin hometown, combining deliberately trashy VHS aesthetics, exaggerated Texas imagery and nods to filmmakers including Alejandro Jodorowsky.
Due on the 2nd October, 'Tejas' finds The Schisms moving away from some of the darkness surrounding previous album Moon. Barker developed much of the material while isolated in a Colorado mountain cabin, later recording every instrumental part himself before bringing bandmates Goose McCollum and Michael Stockton into the process.
