SISTER MADDS - 'Are You Hungry'

Sister Madds arrive at their debut EP with a chip on their shoulder and a hook in their back pocket, and 'Are You Hungry?' makes a strong case that both are entirely warranted. The Glasgow five-piece have spent the last couple of years building a live reputation that precedes them — sold-out Scottish tours, King Tut's, Tenement Trail — and the four tracks here, produced by Jamie Holmes, channel that accumulated energy into something tight, bright, and genuinely fun to be around.

'Table Manners' opens with the kind of angry girl-pop swing that announces intent immediately — fizzing guitars, a vocal that doesn't ask permission, and a chorus that lodges itself somewhere behind your eyes. The tone is set, and it's one of controlled aggression dressed up in something catchy enough for daytime radio. 'Get Rich, Get Girls, You'll Be Happy' leans harder into the rhythm, a driving bassline doing most of the heavy lifting while the band let the groove do the arguing. 'Nepobaby' is the EP's sharpest moment — a pointed, passionate takedown of industry gatekeeping that lands with enough specificity to make you wonder, and enough melody to make you not care either way. Whether it's about anyone in particular is beside the point; it sounds like it means it, and that's what counts.

'No Longer Leaving' closes things on a quieter, more melancholic note — a deliberate gear change that shows a different side to the band, and suggests there's more emotional range here than the bratty surface of the first three tracks might imply. It's a smart way to end: a reminder that the anger and the vulnerability are usually the same feeling, just dressed differently.

'Are You Hungry?' is exactly what a debut EP should be — a bitesize, high-energy introduction that leaves you wanting more rather than explaining everything up front. The Wet Leg and No Doubt comparisons make sense, but Sister Madds have enough personality to outgrow the reference points soon enough. Four tracks, no filler, and a band who clearly know exactly what they're doing.
