SMIC - 'loge'

8/10

There’s a different kind of weight to records that arrive after years of quiet persistence, reflecting a lifetime spent inside music. For SMIC, 'Loge' feels exactly like that, exploding with decades of listening, playing, experimenting, and finally choosing to commit it all to tape.

What immediately stands out is the sense of freedom that runs throughout the album. 'Loge' moves fluidly between styles, pulling from a broad lineage that stretches from Jimi Hendrix through to the raw immediacy of The Clash. But rather than feeling fragmented, the record holds together through tone and intent, with each track shaped by the same instinctive, DIY approach.

There’s also a noticeable contrast in how the album handles energy. 'Hold' leans into a more urgent, post-punk drive, carrying a directness that feels rooted in live-band immediacy. It’s one of the more outward-facing moments on the record, where the influence of decades spent around punk and alternative scenes comes into clearer focus.

On the other end, 'Broken Down' moves with a slower, more reflective pace. Built around a sparse arrangement, it allows space to do much of the work. The gradual introduction of percussion shifts the track subtly, creating a sense of progression without disrupting its overall stillness. It’s a measured piece that highlights SMIC’s understanding of restraint.

But what makes 'Loge' particularly compelling is its process. Recorded entirely at home, often within a matter of hours, the album retains a sense of immediacy that more polished productions can lose. Instruments come and go organically without feeling overly arranged, allowing it to capture a moment while it still feels real.

For SMIC, this release is about opening a door that’s been there for years. And in doing so, 'Loge' offers something unfiltered, reflective, and quietly assured.
