Son Lux - 'Tomorrows III'

7/10

Having always shown themselves as a bold and adventurous outfit over the last decade, regularly pursuing their own intentions without too much outside interference, the last year has proven to be one of the most audacious for Son Lux. While their three album collection 'Tomorrows' was started long before the pandemic hit, its timing and structure around the last 12 months has given it a new context. Both 'Tomorrows I' and 'Tomorrows II' saw them branch out into evermore expansive territory, and now the trio look to cap off their latest venture with 'Tomorrows III', a release that is filled with finality.

While the intention of the 'Tomorrows' project was always to focus and rebuild the sound they had garnered in recent years, its placement within one of the most troublesome and unsettling times in modern history has given it a far more refined and textured direction throughout. On this third instalment, they continue to create broad and vivid soundscapes, mixing ambient production with a haunted demeanour to deliver a brilliantly emotional and heartfelt collection of tranquil electronic offerings that always look to trigger the deepest and darkest emotions within us all.

Although this record is inevitably tethered to their two previous works, 'Tomorrows III' still makes a solid effort in trying to explore something new. The breadth of their musical creativity remains the zenith for most producers in their position, and unveils a wonderfully rich and subdued return that feels so suitably in line with what we have experienced from them recently.
