Scottish progressive metal outfit Surface Detail unleash one of their most adventurous releases yet with ‘This Lantern’, a restless new single taken from their forthcoming autumn album.
Built around a jagged 7/8 pulse, pounding rhythmic accents and deliberately abrasive guitars, the track constantly shifts between technical precision, melody and outright aggression. Inspired partly by guitarist Adam Anderson and drummer Andrew Carus seeing Opeth live, it pushes the band's progressive tendencies into increasingly theatrical territory, culminating in what they describe as their most intentionally “harmonically disgusting” melodic section yet.
Guest vocals from High Voltage frontman Robbie Horn add further weight to an already volatile arrangement, while the lyrics adopt the unusual perspective of a lantern that provides warmth and guidance before being discarded when no longer needed.
Bold, unpredictable and packed with ideas, ‘This Lantern’ finds Surface Detail confidently expanding the scale and imagination of their sound.
