UCHAYE - 'WAR IS OV3R'

8/10

There's something refreshing about the scale of ambition behind UCHAYE's debut EP 'WAR IS OV3R'. Throughout the five-track release, the Minneapolis-based artist traces a clear emotional progression, allowing each track to represent a different state of mind as one relationship collapses and a new identity begins to emerge.

'Denial (Interlude)' sets the scene economically. It functions as a threshold, easing us into the psychological unease that dominates the first half of the project. That tension then expands on 'Denial', where the refusal to accept an ending becomes increasingly unhealthy. But UCHAYE avoids presenting heartbreak as something soft or sentimental; instead, she explores the intensity that can emerge when memory, attachment and imagination start feeding one another.

'Survive' provides the necessary shift, as its heavier guitar-led framework gives the EP a stronger sense of forward motion, with the protagonist beginning to recognise the reality of the situation. From there, 'Currency' takes a darker turn. Instead of moving neatly towards emotional peace, she explores another kind of defence mechanism: replacing intimacy with achievement, status and control.

While closing track 'Live Wire' provides the release the EP has been building towards. With blues-rock influence pushing through its more contemporary production, the song feels broader and more physical than what precedes it. The emphasis is no longer on what has been lost, but on what can now be built.

Across 'WAR IS OV3R', UCHAYE draws from classic rock without sounding trapped by nostalgia. The melodic confidence and guitar-forward arrangements hint at decades of influence, but the emotional framing remains unmistakably contemporary.

For a first EP, this is a remarkably coherent introduction. UCHAYE arrives not only with a strong voice, but with a clear understanding of how sequencing, character and musical dynamics can transform a handful of songs into one complete and immersive narrative.
