Verse Metrics have spent more than a decade working in the spaces between genres, and 'Descents' feels like the point where those different instincts become most firmly connected. Across eleven tracks, the Scottish five-piece pull together math-rock intricacy, post-rock atmosphere and alternative rock weight into a debut album that feels carefully constructed without losing its human centre.

There has always been a certain darkness surrounding the band’s music. Earlier material carried the grey-skied tension of groups such as Interpol and The National, but 'Descents' pushes beyond that framework. The guitars are heavier, the dynamics more pronounced and the arrangements increasingly willing to move from quiet unease into something considerably more forceful.

Verse Metrics are technically accomplished musicians, but they rarely allow complexity to become an end in itself. Unusual structures, angular guitar patterns and shifting rhythms provide the architecture, while melody gives the songs their emotional pull. Even at their most intricate, there's usually something immediate to hold onto.

Their previous single ‘The Nightmares Leave Us All Inoperational’ captures that balance particularly well. Its brooding guitars and darker melodic character retain the gothic quality of the band’s earlier work, while pointing naturally towards the larger scale of the album.

Robert Dick’s vocals also provide an important anchor throughout, giving the more expansive arrangements a recognisable emotional centre. Around him, Alan Conway, Kevin O’Hagan, Chris MacKinnon and Pete Colquhoun create a sound that can turn sharply without losing cohesion.

For a band with such a long history, 'Descents' never feels like a summary of what has already happened. It captures Verse Metrics sounding reinvigorated by the possibilities still available to them. Dark, detailed and confidently expansive, it's a compelling debut full-length from a band whose patience has ultimately worked in their favour.
