Vitalic - 'Voyager'

6/10

When Vitalic dropped his previous album 'Rave Age' back in 2012, it was not only a continuation of his harsh electro sound, but a mirrored release to the trends that were swarming electronic music at the time. But as the brutal sounds of dubstep and bass-drops have fallen way out of fashion since then, the Frenchman has returned with a more contemporary sound, but not without its notable nods to his own electro roots.

Since releasing his debut album 'OK Cowboy' in 2005, Vitalic has been one of the leading figures on the world's electronic music scene, with a flair for powerful and high-energy releases. 'Voyager' however, sees him take a more progressive route, swapping large build-ups for steady rhythms, that come together to create a far more lucid sound than we have heard from him previously. And while there are still the odd moments of rapid energy, much of this record remains a calm and transcendent release.

It certainly is good to see a producer like Vitalic manage to move with the times, and still come away with something engaging. It may not be his most instantly likeable album, but definitely shows that the fire in him is still far from extinguished.
