Wade Easy - 'Honey Venom'

7/10

Wade Easy has always sounded most convincing when his songs feel half-discovered rather than over-explained, and 'Honey Venom' pushes that instinct further than ever.

His third album in under a year, the ten-track record finds the Morgantown singer-songwriter taking the slow-burn Appalachian psychedelia of his recent work and pulling it into something earthier, stranger and more sensual. The guitars feel worn, the rhythms drag with an almost narcotic patience, and the vocals sit low in the mix like thoughts muttered after midnight.

‘Ey Mama’ and ‘Tomato’ establish the album’s loose, dusty atmosphere before lead single ‘Hot Honey’ arrives as one of its clearest statements of intent. Built around rattling textures, twang, drone and minimal percussion, it feels almost like a heatwave caught on tape. There's desire in it, but also danger, as though pleasure and consequence have become impossible to separate.

‘Pirate of Sand’ and ‘Reverie’ lean further into the dream-state, while ‘Strange’ and ‘Low’ pull the mood down into darker territory. By the time ‘Venom’, ‘Raw’ and ‘Stung’ close the album, the imagery has hardened into something almost physical. And the sweetness of the title never arrives without its threat.

As it plays, he's not cluttering these songs with unnecessary detail or chasing dramatic crescendos. Instead, repetition, texture and atmosphere do most of the emotional work. The record feels primitive in the best sense: instinctive, tactile and unconcerned with tidying up its edges.

It's a texture that gives 'Honey Venom' a noticeably different character from his previous LP 'Sea of Night'. Where that record often felt shadowy and nocturnal, this one is more feverish, more bodily and more exposed.

Seductive, murky and wonderfully unhurried, 'Honey Venom' sounds like Wade Easy stripping his music back to impulse and atmosphere. It's the kind of record that doesn't rush to reveal itself; it just waits for you to sink into it.
