Girlpool - 'Forgiveness'

7/10

Ever since they first arrived with their breakthrough debut LP 'Before The World Was BIg' in 2015, LA-based duo Girlpool have always looked to explore the outer peripheries of the alt-pop sphere. Regularly adopting a flurry of diverse aesthetics and ideals throughout their offerings to date, the pair have created a sound that continually looks to break down boundaries and push their ever-evolving direction to its furthest reaches. And after the enormous response to their stunning 'What Chaos Is Imaginary' in 2019, they return once again with their fourth studio album 'Forgiveness', a record that continues that impressive streak.

From the very start, 'Forgiveness' marks itself as one of the more vivid and atmospheric entries in their catalogue so far. Dabbling in darker and more progressive tones that sometimes borrow from the hyperpop scene, their newest collection is a refreshing return to form. Maintaining their deep and inventive pursuit for more unusual angles like never before, we get to experience them at their most experimental and eclectic.

With the album regularly flipping between bold and vibrant tones and the odd sombre moment, 'Forgiveness' feels like they are beginning to really find their feet within their chosen genre. And while its explorative texture doesn't always fit the mould, they always create something new and interesting to sink your teeth into.
