When you first hit play to uber-hyped Bipolar Sunshine's latest EP 'Drowning Butterflies' there is one thing you notice; is this just going to be another Ghostpoet? His depressed and solum vocals over minor chords initially set you up for a downbeat, retrospective look at society and all the dirt it's covered in. But no, suddenly the EP lifts its spirits and we are treated to an record of hope and optimism.
Much like his name suggests, this EP does walk the fence between self-pity and a positive outlook. Like a smirk through tears, Bipolar Sunshine has undoubtedly wanted to make a pop record but his own sense of self-dispear winds up in there somehow and what's left is this incredibly moving little 3-track record. Clearly influenced by the piano lead RnB of the 90s, 'Drowning Butterflies' is a short but sweet ray of sunshine in these darkening months ahead.
He may have already made his way into the up-and-coming lists for next year, but I think Bipolar Sunshine deserves more than just a flash-in-the-pan moment of buzz as this artist not only caps off this year's new talent in style, but also paves a great path into what pop music could be in 2014.
