As his reputation builds, Jonny Amoral is proving himself a force of nature. So we caught up with him to talk about his origins and influences over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
GUITAR!!! Before I had my own guitar, I would be miming with a tennis racket or cricket bat!!
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Grunge is what was playing in my family home, that's what I grew up on. Songs from Pearl Jam, Soungarden & Nirvana were basically nursery rhymes for me!! When I got my 1st guitar Black Sabbath & Metallica started to creep in as a new love.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Ixnay on the Hombre was the 1st album I ever got, gifted to me from my Greek grandmother. I don't think she had any idea of what profanity was on that disc!!! The 1st album I ever purchased with my own money was Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
46 & 2 by Tool. It's mysterious, immersive & thought provoking. Bass & guitar riffs are amazing, fun to play & listen to. Danny Carry is perfect on drums as always. The lyrics always get my mind thinking about different levels of consciousness. Fantastic piece of music!!!
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I have my own little studio setup that I like to vibe out with candles & incense. Always gotta have incense burning!!!
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I'm really loving Bilmuri at the moment. I like how he mixes his post hardcore roots with other styles. His music videos are great too!!! Haha. Nevertel are another newish band that I'm right into currently. And Blackpink, Yep I'm a Blink!!! I also still listen to alot of old school Grunge & Nu Metal.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
I think I'd have to say Pearl Jam. I've been obsessed with them since the day I heard Even Flow as a kid. I tend to write & play heavier stuff, don't know how well I'd be received by the Pearl Jam fans!!
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Having people connected with songs I've written. Seeing people sing words I've written (no matter how silly they may be) back to me from the crowd is a feeling that never gets old!!!
And what is the most frustrating part?
Ummmmm can't think of any frustrating parts, that's why I love it!!!!
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Never stop writing! Also not to spend too long writing a song. I like to look at songs as journal entries, it's whatever you're feeling at that time. If you drag it out, it loses its authenticity. If it's a bit of a mess, it is what it is, that's what you were feeling that day!!
