Four decades after it was first written, evolution 9 finally bring ‘Sweet Number One’ into the spotlight with a bright, infectious blast of melodic power pop.
Led by songwriter and keyboardist Dave Follweiler, the track pairs jangling guitars and rich vocal harmonies with an immediately buoyant arrangement inspired by The Beatles, The Byrds, Cheap Trick and Raspberries. Beneath that upbeat exterior sits a more bittersweet story, with Follweiler reflecting on jealousy, lost love and the lingering hold of someone once considered irreplaceable.
Remarkably, ‘Sweet Number One’ began life as a demo during the mid-1980s. Follweiler originally wrote it after being inspired by Lehigh Valley band St John’s Alliance and even offered them the song, but it remained unreleased until he decided to revisit it decades later.
The finished recording features Gene Cullison, Hub Willson and Jon Lamson, with mixing and mastering from Bob Giovannetti.
