RAC - 'Ego'

After winning his first Grammy Award earlier this year for his remix of Bob Moses' 'Tearing Me Up', prolific producer RAC has returned to the album platform to deliver his latest batch of original material. Following on from his 2014 'Strangers' full-length, the producer has brought along a whole host of collaborators including Rivers Cuomo, St Lucia, MNDR, Rostam and many more to bring a sense of diversity to his new release.

Yet while his previous material and many of his remixes fit into that glossy indie pop arena, 'Ego' sees the beatmaker adopt a far more commercial backdrop for his latest work. Rather than become a clean-cut record of electronic productions, RAC has blurred the line between producer and live composer as the album likes to deliver a different influence on each track. Yet despite its surprising and eclectic nature, much of this release falls a little flat of the mark.

It seems that in his attempt to make a radio-friendly LP, the results have slipped too far in the other direction and what we are left with is a largely forgettable release with all the substandard cliches of the mainstream pop world. There are still the odd likeable single here, such as 'This Song', but much of it just doesn't seem to engage like it should.
