The Aces - 'When My Heart Felt Volcanic'

6/10

Over the last few weeks, it seems that the US quartet The Aces have started to explode almost out of nowhere. And maybe it is due to the sudden spells of sunshine we have started to experience these last few days, but the band's debut album seems to have come along at just the right time to add a much-needed dose of uplifting indie-pop to our dreary lives.

Since their first breakthrough single 'Stuck' dropped earlier this year, the comparisons to Haim have been almost hard to ignore. And I guess when you really get into their whole record, those comparisons seem completely apt. Although while Haim manage to deliver a more fulfilling sound, The Aces have taken a step further down the commercial pop route and instead offer up a collection of songs that do their job while playing, but give little to turn heads or raise eyebrows.

Ultimately, 'When My Heart Felt Volcanic' plays like the soundtrack to a summer barbecue. Brilliant and enjoyable in the right atmosphere, but not really something we can see ourselves remembering in a years time.
