Diana Omar - 'CALCIFY'

8/10

Heartbreak is often described as a collapse without order, reason or warning. But on her long-awaited debut album 'CALCIFY', Diana Omar approaches it differently. Across eleven tracks, the singer-songwriter treats emotional damage as a structure to be examined, measured and gradually rebuilt into something harder.

The result is an alt-pop album defined by tension. Her writing is vulnerable, but the world surrounding it feels controlled and metallic, with moody synthesisers, electronic percussion and carefully arranged moments of silence creating the impression of a system under increasing pressure.

Highlight ‘matching your energy’ captures this conflict particularly well. Its tense atmosphere suggests a relationship in which emotional behaviour has become transactional, with every withdrawal answered by another. The phrase implies balance, but the song appears more interested in the damage caused when self-preservation replaces honest communication.

Elsewhere, ‘angel in despair’ expands the record’s private unease into something more cinematic. Its title places innocence and collapse beside one another, reflecting her recurring interest in contradiction. Throughout the album, softness is rarely allowed to exist without threat, while moments of composure often conceal a more severe emotional fracture beneath them.

As a complete work, 'CALCIFY' presents Diana Omar as an artist capable of bringing her creative identities into genuine conversation. The album is most compelling when it recognises that emotional hardening is neither victory nor defeat. It's an adaptation that may keep a person standing while quietly changing the shape of who they are.

On this vibrant full-length, she turns that process into something stark, intricate and truly absorbing: delivering both a diary of a fractured mind, and a blueprint for the walls it builds in response.
