Editors' Tom Smith shares debut solo single 'Lights Of New York City'

After two decades fronting UK indie rock mainstays Editors, Tom Smith has stepped into the spotlight alone with the release of his debut solo single 'Lights Of New York City'. Out now via Play It Again Sam, the track marks the beginning of a new chapter for the vocalist and songwriter, offering a raw, intimate glimpse into his songwriting roots.

Collaborating with acclaimed Irish songwriter Iain Archer, Smith crafts a haunting ballad steeped in nostalgia. 'Lights of New York City' reflects on the innocence and awe of youth through a cinematic lens, driven by simple instrumentation and Smith’s unmistakable baritone. “It pines for lost youth,” he says. “A song looking back at the wide-eyed wonder held in a previous chapter of my life.”

The track is accompanied by a beautifully shot video directed by Niall Trask, echoing the song’s wistful tone and timeless simplicity.

Explaining his decision to temporarily step away from Editors, Smith shared: “Artistically I realised I wanted to do something which was a purer representation of the songs I write… presented simply. I’ve just always had the calling to write and sing sad songs.”
