Getting To Know... ANNNA

Following on from a wave of bold and impressive alt-pop anthems over the last few years, Amsterdam-based singer and songwriter ANNNA now returns with her latest captivating offering 'Silver Spoons'.

Lifted from her forthcoming EP 'Pay Bills/Climb Hills', which is set to land in November, 'Silver Spoons' makes for a truly bright and memorable new offering. With its atmospheric production layered effortlessly over her own distinct vocal performance, her newest gem sees her follow in the footsteps of acts such as Sia and Tove Lo with its pulsing intentions.

So with her new single doing the rounds right now, we sat down with her to find out more about her background and what has inspired her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Marimba. My dear childhood friend played it (and still does) and that sound is just beyond beautiful.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

Weird, I always get this question but I think my answer changes every time haha. Probably my inspirations don’t make much sense but I’m a big fan of Disclosure. In terms of the sound, danceability and the songs they make, that’s how I want to make people feel when hearing my music. Another new huge inspiration to me is Stromae: his storytelling and crazy sticky tracks have really made me who I am.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

Oh, well that went from all over the place. From a huge Radiohead fan to The Killers and Coldplay. Meanwhile, my first, and I mean, my forever first was Britney. Will never forget how I got that first CD… happiness.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

There were loads, but mostly it was Radiohead. I know, it doesn’t fit with my current music at all, but the way their music makes me feel- that was the reason for doing it all.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

Don’t want to be super self-absorbed here haha, but lately I’ve been listening to my own! Especially my new demos – I’m so hooped up to my own stuff lately that it sounds super egoistic. But other than that, I’d always put some Michael Kiwanuka on and slide my way into the kitchen.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

I could say loads, but then I would lie, because I mostly make up things. I used to write about “that one person” but now I’m making that person into another one, add a location, add more context and make it a storyline that I relate to.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Playing a warm up concert for the American artist LP in front of more than 8000 people. It was crazy. Also, winning the Amsterdam Dance Event’s Demolition in October last year- just those moments when people appreciate what you do and all that work that you have put into it, pays out a little.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

Sustainable fashion. I’m a pretty big sustainability geek, I own my own sustainable merch store for my music https://annnaofficial.com as well as a 100% organic, cruelty free silk shop: https://masa.organic

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

I guess sales in something. I’m super passionate about meeting people and making “a deal happen”. Don’t want to be too ambitious, again, haha but I’m trying my best with both my merchandise and the Māsa Organic store.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

Realise that it will be super hard work, so be prepared to make music with 15% of your time and do marketing/promotions and connecting for the rest of the time.
