What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The bass is the one that started it all. All of my friends played music, and were in need of a bass player. Here I came to save the day!

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

It has always been about the people, and environment around me, and the reactions to this ever changing world. It is a never-ending inspiration especially as we get older and face choices of hardship, love, and change.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

It all started with my brother’s collection. Notable artists that come to mind are Arrested Development, Pearl Jam, Bel Biv DeVoe, Stone Temple Pilots, and Warren G. Loved all these artists, but it was Primus that taught me going against the norm of whatever craft you pursue is truly a crusade only of the brave.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

I never felt like being anything actually hahaha, but I definitely wanted to help others and make people feel good or release whatever emotion they had within them. Arrested Development - Everyday People was the track that taught me the true beauty behind creation. I remember popping that on, and just being in awe of the incredible sound. It was simple yet lush with complex layers. Music makes people feel something whether it’s happiness, sadness, solidarity or any other emotion for that matter.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

That truly depends on the day. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of the artists from the 2020 Polaris Prize Long List. It pretty much covers the best of Canada in all genres.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

At least a good 5 of them. I think we all have such a unique story behind all of us, and I wanted to share with others my outlook on their journey through life and my relationship with them at that time.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

I’ve been very fortunate to have played in Europe, North America and Japan multiple times, but to be honest, I don’t have one hahaha. They were all special at the time. I’ve met some incredible people and played amazing venues and festivals, but I always look at the creation of new memories the most wonderful thing.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

I absolutely love chess, and play about 5 games a day. I used to be a chess teacher, which pretty much helped pay for my touring across Canada and the US. It has taught me how to think ahead, and it just relaxes me. Find me on chess.com.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

I’ve always been a teacher and in some ways consider musicians another form of teaching. That is my path forever and always.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

Take a damn chance. Even if it’s a long shot, you’ll be surprised who gets back to you. Also, always progress at whatever you do , and have fun with it.
