Getting To Know... Floral Image

After spending the last few years championing a fresh and immersive approach to the psych-rock sound, Norwich-based outfit Floral Image have now delivered their eagerly-awaited debut EP 'So Synthesised'.

Featuring the previously unveiled cuts 'Gallipoli' and 'Babe & The Devil', this new four-track collection makes for a wonderfully fun and driven listen. Filled with broad and spiralling textures, a progressive atmosphere, and vibrant hooks throughout, 'So Synthesised' cements them as one of the more exciting names emerging on the scene right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with the band's synth wizard and producer Jack to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

It's got to be my Mum's upright piano. I would spend hours physically abusing the ivories, creating musical stories in my head of Battles between Giants (low notes) and Fairies (high notes - Fairies would always win.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

My oldest friend Chris showed me 'I Am The Walrus' and 'Apeman' when I was 10 years old which broadened my musical loves away from 90s chart pop and musical theatre (thanks Mum).

What was the first album you remember owning?

Unfortunately for me, the first album I ever bought was 'Popstars' by Hear'Say featuring number 1 hit, 'Pure & Simple. It wasn't until my mid-teens that I released that this was socially unacceptable in the age of indie.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

God Only Knows.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

My song writing happens in-between periods of deep seasonal depression and can be quite spontaneous and sporadic. My latest demo came whilst sitting on the toilet at my girlfriend's parents house in Gravesend - it's a polyrhythmic synth pop song. Sounds better than it smelt.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Obsessing with King Gizz's Live at Red Rocks album at the moment - 8 hours of pure fuzz jams. Also delving deep into Aphex Twin.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

It's got to be Gizz. I am sure the band would agree.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Recording weekends away with the band and see lots of smiley faces across the country when on tour - you all have lovely grins and smell clean. Clean is good.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Sending emails into the music industry ether and having more chance of conversing with a Moon Lizard.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

To not take it too seriously; especially when in the rehearsal room and on stage. Smile, laugh with your band mates, love life.
