What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
The guitar for sure! The way a well executed guitar solo can ignite and energise any song or crowd that it is in or in front of has always fascinated me.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
All of it! Obviously hip hop had a big influence on my life, but I listened to everything growing up. My mom always had good taste in music so we would be listening to everything from Simon & Garfunkel to Coolio to Alanis Morissette to DC talk and everything in between.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Coolio- Gangstas Paradise…. On cassette tape… I’m old haha.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Sunday best by Surfaces, the vibe, the message, everything about it is my style!
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I always have the beat playing while writing—it fuels my creativity and helps me match the song’s vibe. I also focus on the exact part of the beat I’m writing to, making sure my lyrics and cadence hit the drops perfectly, which is key to the song’s feel.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Forrest Frank, Nobigdyl, Indie Tribe, Caleb Gordon, and Hulvey lately.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Probably Forrest Frank I feel like I would connect very well with his audience and that show would be crazy!
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Connecting with people has always been my favorite thing to do in life so when I’m able to do that on stage and perform live, I would say that is one of the better feelings in life!
And what is the most frustrating part?
The amount of work and money it takes after releasing your music to actually get it in front of people to listen to as an independent artist.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Be authentic. It’s easy to get caught up in what others think or chase what we think will be a hit. But when you stay true to yourself, it shines through in the music—you can hear it, feel it, no doubt about it.
