What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I really, really fell in love with was the drums at age 12. Initially, I started playing guitar and kind of looked down on the drums for many years, but after giving it a few goes it became an absolute obsession of mine.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

For me musically it HAS to be Dave Grohl. When you start looking into all the bands he’s worked with, he covers a lot of ground and for me, as someone who is trying to record and release music now, he’s a great focus point. Lyrically for me I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration for the songs from my own personal experiences with grief, mental health, heartbreak and dealing with the crazy world we see everyday.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

As a teenager I really loved all things 90’s – Grunge, Alternative rock, Britpop. Bands like Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Green Day, Oasis were my growing up music, and really influence the sound I have today. Queens of The Stone Age was another one of those bands too.

What do you find is the best environment to find inspiration for your music?

For me the good stuff seems to come when I’m in a good space – either a quiet room or feeling good about myself mentally. Maybe some of the lyrical content stems from extreme experiences like grief or heartbreak – but generally the tunes and melodies tend to come when I’m feeling good.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

At the moment it’s kind of circulating between Tyler, The Creator; Childish Gambino and Mac Demarco. I think they all have a great uniqueness about them, strong personalities and follow their curiosities wherever they may go.

How many of your songs have you written about people you wish you’d rather forget?

There are a few, but I try and make sure there are a wide variety of themes to the songs, so that it doesn’t just become about one thing or one person.

What has been the funniest moment in your career so far?

So far I haven’t had too many experiences as The Kid and I due to all things COVID, but I guess for me the most funniest memory I have is when I was mixing White Feather I would be blasting it all day long all over the house, basically until the point of insanity, and making my family go absolutely crazy listening to it over and over again.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Either the Foo Fighters or Queens of The Stone Age.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Outside of music I am also an actor, so that is something I am also currently pursuing as well as music.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

A few years ago, I was studying at LCCM under the tutelage of a fabulous musician called Camille Hinds. We were in a studio session one day and for some reason I was really struggling with getting a decent take for this song we were working on. I was really getting in my own head about it, and it wasn’t helping the situation. Cam sat me down and basically said that it was okay to make mistakes, that things like this have happened to everyone, and sometimes it takes 20 takes to get a song right, and that’s okay. Coming from someone who has had a crazy career as a musician, this went a long way to calm my nerves and is something I still carry with me today.
