Getting To Know... Pochenski

With a rich and diverse background amongst them, Manchester-based newcomers Pochenski have now unveiled themselves to the world with their blistering debut single 'How Long'.

Channeling the raw and powerful sound of acts like White Lies and The Amazons, 'How Long' makes for an incredibly intense initial offering from the group. Filled with killer riffs, pounding production, and a truly catchy chorus, be prepared to have this one buried in your head long after you've first heard it.

So with their new release doing the rounds right now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

George first fell in love with the drums after watching John Bonham's performance with Led Zeppelin at the Royal Albert Hall. Kez’s first instrument was guitar inspired by Metallica after watching the live S and M performance with the San Francisco symphony orchestra and Dan's first love was vocals and lyrics inspired by Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

What was the first song that inspired you to make your own music?

As a band we have all been inspired by many different artists;

George: Nirvana - You Know You’re Right.

Kez: Metallica - No Leaf Clover.

Dan: Oasis - Columbia.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

We were all mad about music as teenagers and all listening to slightly different things, George and Kez predominantly were listening to lots of Grunge, Metal and Progressive Rock whereas Dan was more into Bob Dylan, Syd Barret and Lou Reed.

What do you find is the best environment to find inspiration for your music?

We tend to write a lot of the music now independently but still find playing together in a rehearsal room is the best environment for inspiration.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Emma Ruth Rundle, Architects, Khruangbin, Elvis Costello, MF Doom.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

Dan: As the lyricist in the band I never intentionally write about people in particular however all experiences tend to come out when i'm writing so i guess there may be a few people in there.

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

Covid-19.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Radiohead.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

George: Football Coach.

Dan: Armed Forces.

Kez: Teacher.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

George: Serve the song.

Dan: Don’t wait for inspiration just start.
