Getting To Know... Pol

After spending the last year delivering a string of rich and immersive efforts, Dutch duo Pol are now looking to cement their legacy to date with the release of their eagerly-awaited self-titled debut EP.

Featuring the previously shared singles 'Modern Strange Love', 'Boys Are' and 'Comme Ça', this new five-track collection makes for an incredibly warm and embracing listen. Exploring more of that driven post-punk-inspired aesthetic they have been developing recently, 'Pol' cements them as one of the more exciting names on the rise right now.

So with the new EP available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has inspired them most over the years.

We both fell in love with a different instrument. Matthijs picked up the drums as first instrument, while Ruben fell in love with the guitar.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Michael Jackson

What was the first album you remember owning?

We don’t really remember owning, but we clearly remember listening to artists like Robbie Williams, Dido and Anastacia in the early 2000s.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

For us both that would be Blue Monday by New Order.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

We often like to make the room smell nice with insence and we are an advocate of taking breaks so you keep your ears fresh.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

To name a few: Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Psychedelic Furs, The Cure, Bowie, Nirvana, Ultravox.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Looking at bands which are still currently playing live, probably: The Cure, New Order, Duran Duran or Tears for Fears.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Being able to translate your experiences, feelings and thoughts into a song. Which then is able to give you that exact feeling whenever you play the song.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not being able to get an idea down how you imagined it.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Trust your gut.
