What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Although my first instrument was trumpet, which I began playing at age 12, my real love became the guitar at 14. That’s when I saw Edward Van Halen perform live on MTV and I fell in love with how an artist could express themselves so powerfully and authentically.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

Initially I loved the pop-rock artists of the 60s/70s such as Beatles, ABBA, Elton John and Billy Joel. From there, I felt moved by 80s guitar-driven rock such as Van Halen and Ozzy Osbourne. I of course loved alternative bands such as Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. Later, into songwriting geniuses such as Ben Folds, Guster, and Avett Brothers.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Glass Houses, Billy Joel.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Yesterday by the Beatles

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Great question! I have found a few things that help put me into a creative state. For me, this usually means clearing my mind through running, spending time with my family (wife, 2 kids, dogs) or cooking.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

A friend recently got me into Nada Surf and I can’t stop listening to their latest record, Moon Mirror.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Other than the Beatles, I’d say. Guster, hands down. They are such a fun, creative and innovative band…plus they seem like just fun guys to hang out with…

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Authentic self expression in a way that helps make a positive impact for others. If I can help bring joy to someone even for a moment, I feel like there is no greater gift.

And what is the most frustrating part?

People on the “business side” who aren’t professional (e.g. don’t respond, aren’t kind or respectful).

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Just play from your heart and the rest will take care of itself.
