There's something quite remarkable about an album surviving long enough to meet a different version of the person who wrote it. 'Significant Others' began taking shape years ago, then drifted in and out of reach as family, work and personal difficulties took precedence. But rather than feeling dated by that journey, the record seems strengthened by it, as these songs have had time to absorb the life around them.
Hamish Bell Guerrini writes with the directness of someone who values melody first and complication second. His influences are broad but 'Significant Others' is most convincing when it stays close to the people and memories that matter personally.
The songs written for his three children are central to that. ‘Helpless’, ‘I’m Prepared To Wait’ and ‘Love All Around’ carry the intimacy of pieces written in real time, not reconstructed later from memory. While ‘Don’t Try And Break My Heart’ gains its own warmth from the knowledge that his own parents still dance to it.
Producer Chris Oldfield helps bring the scattered material into focus, but the album still feels homespun in the best sense. Nothing about it suggests an attempt to erase the years between writing and release. Instead, 'Significant Others' allows time to become part of the arrangement.
Warm, melodic and deeply personal, 'Significant Others' is a record that seems to have grown while it waited, giving us something truly worth waiting for.
