The Inadequates deliver new single 'Genevieve'

Brisbane’s The Inadequates may be best known for their flamboyant suits and boundless stage energy, but on 'Genevieve', the indie-folk trio reveal a more tender side without losing their knack for hooks that stick like burrs.

As the third single ahead of their upcoming debut 'Haven’t You Heard?', 'Genevieve' is a bittersweet breakup song disguised as a folk-pop earworm. Its melodic core is stitched from intricate mandolin and acoustic guitar interplay, while accordion swells and a rich double bass add depth to the arrangement. The result is an orchestral yet intimate sound, lifted skyward by soaring harmonies from Lawson Mackriell, Marcus Church, and Jackson Church.

'Genevieve' is classic Inadequates in its ability to balance emotion and energy, the kind of song that makes you want to dance even as it tugs at the chest. It’s easy to see why the band’s reputation has often leaned closer to rock than folk; there’s a kinetic pulse here, even in its quieter moments, that demands attention.

With a national tour set for September, the trio (plus double bassist Benja King) will soon be bringing their layered harmonies and lively charisma to stages across Australia. And if 'Genevieve' is any indication, 'Haven’t You Heard?' is shaping up to be a debut that marries charm, craft, and a refreshing refusal to fit neatly into genre lines.
