Indian Wells - 'Pause'

7/10

While abstract electronic music has always found a home in the UK, it has been interesting to hear how the rest of the world takes on this fairly unconventional genre. The new album from Italian producer Indian Wells shows that not only does the sound have universally recognised formula, but even those from outside of the Northern European countries can find the brooding and dark inspiration that helps breathe life into this genre.

From the start, 'Pause' has this minimal approach to its instrumentation but the production maintains a rich tapestry of sounds that come together to create an atmosphere of lucid wonderment. It is clear that Indian Wells has managed to cultivate a solid and purposed direction as this seven-track full-length never falters from its core style, and makes for an interesting and engaging release with all the hallmarks of a producer looking to make a serious impact.

It is this unwavering rhythm that keeps the pace of the album ever moving forward, and while it may not have the diversity of say Jamie XX, 'Pause' is still a record that can surprise you time and time again.
