King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - 'Polygondwanaland'

7/10

While the idea of a constant stream of new King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard material throughout this year was a nice gimmick when it began, sometimes you feel like they may have been trying too hard to keep the releases fresh and original. Of the three studios we have seen in the previous ten months, one has been a concept release and another a collaboration, but now for album number four of 2017, the Aussie psych-rockers have returned to their traditional sound to give us a truly warped out trip.

'Polygondwanaland' may be one of their more unpronounceable titles but it certainly sets up the precedent that this is King Gizzard back to their weird best. With 10-minute lead single 'Crumbling Castle' providing the opening, this new release proves itself as one of the more traditionally psyched-out albums we have seen from them so far. Mixing up time signatures and rhythm throughout, the record does its best to win us back to their more familiar sound than their output so far has tried.

You would be hard pressed to pick a favourite album of theirs so far this year, but this would most certainly be a contender. Weird and wonderful from start to finish, this is the true King Gizzard we all know and love.
