Lucy Dacus - 'Home Video'

9/10

After making waves as a member of supergroup boygenius in recent years, we have watched as her bandmates Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker steal the limelight whenever they can. And while Lucy Dacus has always been an artist pushing the boundaries of modern indie-rock, she has been unfairly in the shadow of her contemporaries of late. But it feels like all that is about to change as she drops her third studio album 'Home Video', a record that sees her break away from a more confined sound and deliver something truly memorable throughout.

In the build up to this release, we saw that a number of tracks on here had been performed by Lucy at live shows over the years but never released, leading us to the opinion that this album was about appeasing her longstanding fanbase and creating something that those who have stood by her would appreciate the most. From the start, 'Home Video' is a rich and vibrant array of offerings, swapping back and forth between a more uplifting and then solemn atmospheres to create a blissfully enticing listen that cements her as one of the most captivating songwriters working today.

She still may not be the household name she deserves to be, but 'Home Video' is one of those rare gems that we can see growing in people's minds throughout the year. Its broad and diverse direction supplies something for every disposition and showcases some of the most awe-inspiring singles of the year so far.
