Miles Kane - 'Change The Show'

7/10

Over the last few years, Miles Kane has found himself going through an artistic flux that has begun to reshape how he approaches new music. Around the release of his 2018 LP 'Coup De Grace', he chose to leave his then home LA after not really finding the same comfort in the US as the UK had bestowed on him. The move to London shifted his confidence into a more positive one and he began to feel more free in the material he wanted to create from now on. Returning with his fourth full-length 'Change The Show', this new record aims to highlight those progressive ideals.

From the start, 'Change The Show' looks to bring together all the diverse aesthetics he has explored, both as a solo act and his work within The Last Shadow Puppets and The Rascals. Taking cues from a classic 60s-inspired soul direction and blending with his contemporary indie-rock vision gives his latest collection a fresh and enjoyable sound. There seems to be this energetic approach to his style on here, regularly shunning the expectation of what his fanbase would expect in exchange for a bright and bouncing aesthetic, filled with shimmering and joyous hooks.

It may have come in the wake of a difficult period in his creative life, but 'Change The Show' showcases a renewed and lively frontman at the helm. The pretence has been completely stripped from this new release as he looks to pursue bolder and more adventurous ideas, continuing his legacy as one of the UK's most beloved songwriters.
